Joy-Ann Reid & Eric Holder — March On! Festival, Washington DC

Client: Canady Foundation of the Arts | Event: March On! Festival | Location: Washington, DC | Year: 2020

Photographing Legacy Passing Between Generations on a Washington Stage

At the March On! Festival in Washington, DC, Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and MSNBC host Joy-Ann Reid delivered remarks on leadership, legacy, and civic responsibility to the next generation of changemakers. CreeseWorks was commissioned by the Canady Foundation of the Arts to capture the event through editorial-quality photography that could serve both press and promotional needs, images that would communicate not just what happened but what it meant.

Civic Event Photography Built for National Media Standards

The March On! Festival team needed photography that went beyond basic event coverage to tell a story of legacy and connection, reflecting the festival's brand values of justice, equality, and youth empowerment, while delivering editorial-ready images for national media and digital platforms. The resulting work was used across March On!'s social and promotional platforms and positioned the festival as a serious platform for civic leadership.

High-Profile Subjects, High-Security Environment, No Retakes

Working in a high-security, time-limited environment with two nationally recognized figures meant Creese had minimal intrusion time and no second chances at key moments. He had to balance available lighting with professional exposure control while maintaining a visual tone consistent with the editorial outlets, including The Washington Post and The New York Times, where CreeseWorks' work has also appeared. The approach was flash light enhanced with modifiers and unobtrusive coverage that let moments unfold naturally rather than manufacturing them.

March On! and the Civic Education Mission Behind the Frame

The March On! Festival was created by the Canady Foundation of the Arts as a platform for civic engagement, connecting students and young adults with national leaders across law, media, and politics. Joy-Ann Reid hosts The ReidOut on MSNBC and is one of the most prominent voices on politics and race in national media. Eric Holder, the 82nd Attorney General of the United States, went on to chair the National Democratic Redistricting Committee. Their shared platform at the festival was a direct expression of the event's mission, using the authority of established leadership to speak directly to the next generation.
